Cisco Avila scored 66 seconds into the second half to lift Cal State San Marcos past Biola 2-1 Saturday at Al Barbour Field in La Mirada. The Cougars reached that position by answering Biola's opening goal within barely two minutes.
Cisco Avila supplied the deciding touch in the 47th minute. A CSUSM throw-in reached Jacob Arellano, whose header moved the ball to Matthew Ibarra near the top-left corner of the box. Ibarra played it backward toward Avila, and the senior finished from eight yards into the left side. The goal was Avila's team-leading third of the season.
The sequence completed a quick reversal that began before halftime. Biola went ahead when Jeremy Larson crossed from the right and Luca McGreevey Couchman headed the ball into the left side in the 24th minute. At 25:30, Ibarra found a loose ball in front of the goalkeeper and scored from six yards to make it 1-1.
CSUSM had created more of the first-half volume even before it equalized. The Cougars led 9-3 in shots and 4-2 in shots on goal through 45 minutes. Biola's opening goal therefore did not change their approach for long. They kept play in the attacking half, found the loose second ball and entered intermission level rather than chasing.
After Avila's goal, the match narrowed. CSUSM finished with a 12-11 edge in shots, and each team put five on target. Both sides took one corner. Those totals show how much the second half shifted from the Cougars' early territorial advantage into management of a one-goal lead.
Goalkeeper Yoel Vazquez made four saves for CSUSM and conceded only Couchman's header. The Cougars were called for 15 fouls to Biola's 11, another sign that protecting the middle and disrupting transitions became part of the closing work. There was no insurance goal. The defense had to make Avila's finish stand for more than 43 minutes.
The shot chart stayed concentrated around the scorers. Ibarra attempted three shots and put two on target; Avila also took three and scored with his only shot on goal. Brando Oros and Andrew Valencia supplied the Cougars' other two shots on frame. Biola goalkeeper Caden Yoo stopped three, while Vazquez's fourth save preserved the difference at the other end.
Neither team generated repeated corner-kick pressure. Each finished with one, and both came before the match was decided. That left open play and a single throw-in sequence to settle the afternoon. CSUSM's winning move did not require a long possession: three contacts advanced the restart from touchline to header, backward pass and finish before Biola could reset its shape.
Ibarra left the match with a goal and an assist, both central to the turn. His equalizer was his second goal this year. The assist to Avila was his first of the season, as was Arellano's. CSUSM has now beaten Biola in three of the teams' last four seasons and holds an 8-5-5 advantage in the all-time series.
The Cougars improved to 3-1, their best four-game start since 2010. They return to San Marcos Monday for their home opener and final nonconference match against Westmont, with a senior ceremony scheduled before kickoff. Saturday gave that home date a useful shape: CSUSM can recover quickly after conceding, and its leading scorer can finish a designed restart sequence. The remaining test is sustaining the first half's chance advantage after the lead arrives.
