Brittany Brown turned a quiet Senior Day into Cal State San Marcos' first win of the season. She scored twice in the second half, and the Cougars limited Vanguard to two shots on goal in a 2-0 victory Saturday at The Cage.
The first half offered no hint of the final separation. Each team attempted two shots and earned two corners. CSUSM put the only effort on target, but neither side scored. The Cougars entered halftime with the ceremony complete and the competitive work unresolved.
That changed two minutes after the restart. Luca Puccio sent a long pass down the sideline, and Brianna Delgado collected it outside the left side of the penalty area. Delgado carried inward and found Brown to the right. From six yards, Brown finished into the left corner in the 48th minute.
The goal combined three players at different points in their careers and gave both providers their first assists of the season. It was Puccio's first college assist and Delgado's third. More immediately, the sequence forced Vanguard to chase a match that had produced only five total shots through the opening 47 minutes.
Brown created the second goal herself in the 66th. After a Cougar throw-in, she dribbled across the length of the box from the outside and shot from beyond its top edge, again finding the left corner. Her first two goals of the season arrived 18 minutes apart and lifted her CSUSM career total to five.
San Marcos finished with a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in attempts on target. Vanguard took six corners to CSUSM's five and held 52% possession. Those margins show that the Cougars did not monopolize the ball or every restart. They won through the quality and completion of Brown's two second-half actions, both directed into the left corner.
The defensive line made those finishes sufficient. Vanguard put both of its shots on goal after halftime, and CSUSM saved both. The teams committed seven fouls apiece. No late surge altered the match, allowing the Cougars to close their first victory without the single-goal risk that followed Brown's opener. The shutout also meant Brown's first finish could remain the winner rather than merely the start of an exchange.
CSUSM improved to 1-0-2, remaining unbeaten through three matches. The win was only the Cougars' second in eight meetings with Vanguard and their first in the series since 2012. Before kickoff, the program honored Brianna Delgado, Lily Jensen, Isabelle Walsh, Luca Puccio, Izzie Hernandez-Bravo and Madi Carreon. Six seniors received recognition; two of them, Delgado and Puccio, then helped build the opening goal.
The Cougars visit Biola on Thursday at 7 p.m. Brown's brace gives the attack a finished example to carry into that road match, but the supporting detail matters too. The opener started with Puccio's service and Delgado's movement; the second came from Brown extending a throw-in on her own. Two different routes broke the same corner of the goal and a match that had been level for an entire half.
