Major League Soccer awarded an expansion franchise to San Diego, naming the city as the home of the league's 30th club.

The ownership group included Mohamed Mansour and the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. The team was scheduled to begin competition in 2025 and play home matches at Snapdragon Stadium.

The announcement added men's first-division soccer to a market where the Wave had already demonstrated strong demand and set up a two-year runway to build the new club's roster and identity.
