Point Loma reached set point in the third set but could not turn one opening into a longer night. Biola swept the Sea Lions 25-19, 25-23, 27-25 on Tuesday in La Mirada, sending PLNU to 0-1 in PacWest play after a four-win nonconference start.
The first set broke on the service line. With the score tied 6-6, Biola's Alex Strating served through an 11-point run. She recorded three aces during the surge while Payton Tully and Savannah Simpson added pressure at the net. Point Loma narrowed the gap late, but the 17-6 separation was too large to erase.
PLNU changed the early pattern in the second, building a 10-6 lead. Biola drew level at 11, and neither side created meaningful distance afterward. At 23-23, Hannah Hanson gave the Eagles set point with a kill. A Point Loma attack error ended the frame on the next rally.
The final set demanded extra points. Point Loma led 24-23 and stood one swing from extending the match. Strating answered with a kill, then Tully put Biola ahead. The Sea Lions tied the set at 25, but another Strating kill created match point before Juliana Van Ommering supplied the last attack.
Point Loma actually produced more kills, 43-38. The efficiency gap decided more. The Sea Lions committed 17 attack errors across 121 attempts and hit .215; Biola made 11 errors on 104 attempts and hit .260. In the third set, the Eagles hit .357 with 17 kills and only two total errors.
Serving widened the margin beyond hitting percentage. Biola recorded nine aces to Point Loma's two. Strating had four on her own, along with eight kills on a .467 hitting mark and two blocks. The Eagles also held an 8-5 team advantage in blocks, taking points both before and after the ball crossed the net. Point Loma's 39 assists to Biola's 35 reflected its higher kill total, but not the quality of the first contact that began each possession.
Haylee LaFontaine led Biola with 10 kills, while Van Ommering added nine kills and eight digs. Lexi Lambert distributed 18 assists and Hanson had 14. Those figures come from Biola's official recap and box score; Point Loma had not posted its own account to its news feed by Wednesday morning.
The result ended PLNU's three-match winning streak at the San Diego Invite and moved its overall record to 4-3. Biola improved to 6-2 and has won five straight matches, all in straight sets. The opponent's form makes the sweep less isolated, but it does not soften the conference loss in the standings. Nor does the 0-3 line show how close PLNU came to forcing a fourth set at 24-23 late Tuesday.
Point Loma's next scheduled match is its PacWest home opener against Hawaii Pacific on Sept. 16 in Golden Gym. The eight-day interval gives the Sea Lions time to address the category that traveled most poorly to La Mirada on Tuesday. Forty-three kills created chances; nine opposing aces repeatedly prevented PLNU from organizing them.
