Point Loma will use its fourth annual men's basketball tip-off dinner to raise money for the Ethan Hamilton Leadership Scholarship, the university announced Wednesday. The event begins at 7 p.m. Oct. 30 at Liberty Station Conference Center, one night before an exhibition against Azusa Pacific.
The program combines a meal, a season preview and access to players and coaches. Head coach Justin Downer is scheduled to address attendees before his fourth season, while the university will announce both the scholarship recipient and its men's basketball service award honoree.
Point Loma says every dollar raised at the dinner will go directly to the leadership scholarship. The release does not list a fundraising target, ticket price or the scholarship's award amount. Those omissions mean the event's financial result will need to be judged after registration and expenses are reported.
The next afternoon shifts from presentation to competition. Azusa Pacific visits Golden Gym for a 1 p.m. Halloween exhibition on Oct. 31. The university is encouraging costumes and a trick-or-treat theme around the weekend, though the exhibition will not count in the regular-season standings.
Downer's roster returns nine players from a team that went 27-6 overall and 18-4 in the PacWest last season. Point Loma won a conference-record fifth consecutive PacWest regular-season championship and its fifth tournament title in seven completed postseasons, then reached the NCAA West Regional final.
Four transfers and three freshmen join that returning group. The dinner offers supporters an introduction before the competitive schedule starts, but the roster's actual rotation will emerge in the exhibition and early games. An event-stage preview cannot answer how minutes and roles will be distributed under game pressure.
The regular season begins Nov. 7-8 at the Small College Basketball Hall of Fame Classic in Lakeland, Florida. That trip places the Sea Lions against other Division II programs away from Golden Gym immediately after the exhibition, shortening the time between ceremonial launch and results that count.
Fundraising is the weekend's other score. Leadership scholarships convert alumni and supporter participation into aid tied to a named program value. Point Loma's announcement describes the recipient recognition and destination for proceeds, but it does not identify eligibility rules or how the award affects a student's total cost of attendance.
The calendar gives organizers two distinct audiences in one weekend. Friday's conference-center dinner is built around donors, former players and a formal program; Saturday's campus exhibition is positioned for families and fans. Linking them may extend attention to the scholarship, but Point Loma has not said whether exhibition attendance, dinner registration or a separate contribution will be used to calculate the final fundraising result. The exhibition follows the dinner by 18 hours on the calendar.
Those details need not flatten the gathering into a balance sheet. The dinner is also designed to place current players beside former players and program supporters, making continuity visible before another season. Its measurable legacy, however, will be the scholarship funding delivered after the plates are cleared and the costumes move into Golden Gym.
