San Diego County has added an influenza vaccination dashboard to its respiratory-virus data page as seasonal shots arrive in clinics and pharmacies. Announced Friday, the interactive display is designed to update weekly and place flu coverage beside existing information on COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus, or RSV.

A vaccination dashboard measures uptake, not protection in any one person. Its value is in showing how coverage changes over time and whether participation differs among groups or parts of the county. Public-health teams can compare those patterns with separate surveillance of cases, hospitalizations and deaths, while residents can see the scale of the campaign beyond an individual appointment.

The county's broader surveillance page makes those categories distinct. Laboratory-reported cases can miss infections identified only by self-tests, and recent counts can change as reports arrive. Hospitalization figures include patients diagnosed during a stay and do not always mean the virus caused the admission. Death data can lag. Those limits matter when vaccination and illness curves are read together.

County officials aligned their fall message with the California Department of Public Health and the West Coast Health Alliance. They identified infants, young children, older adults, pregnant people, residents of group settings and close contacts of medically vulnerable people among those at greater risk. Health-care workers are included because illness and absences can affect the capacity of the care system itself.

The announcement also pointed to recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Academy of Family Physicians. Those organizations support vaccination as protection against severe outcomes and transmission. The county did not present the new dashboard as a forecast of how intense the coming respiratory season will be.

Access remains the practical side of that guidance. Residents can seek vaccination through their health-care providers or California's My Turn scheduling system. The county directs people who are uninsured or underinsured to public-health centers. A coverage percentage can show a gap, but clinic hours, transportation, cost questions and appointment availability determine whether a person can close it.

The dashboard sits within a data system that tracks more than vaccines. Users can view respiratory-virus cases, hospitalizations and deaths; emergency-department syndromic information; and wastewater surveillance. County notes say rates rely on SANDAG population estimates and that seasonal reporting generally runs from epidemiological week 27 of one year through week 26 of the next, roughly July to June.

The reporting cadence is not uniform across every measure. The county issues its respiratory-virus surveillance report weekly on Thursdays from October through April, then monthly on the second Thursday from April through September. Death-rate calculations use a four-week average with a 21-day lag. A newly updated vaccination chart can therefore sit beside illness measures that reflect different collection dates and reporting delays. Weekly updates will make the tool most useful as a trend rather than a launch-day snapshot. The first questions are basic: whether coverage rises as vaccine supply reaches more sites, which age groups remain behind and whether geographic differences persist. Later, separate hospitalization and death data can describe disease burden. The dashboard organizes those signals; it does not collapse them into a single claim about cause or effectiveness.
