A Scripps Institution of Oceanography center built to connect biology with policy is turning 25, and its anniversary will move from lecture hall to aquarium. The Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation has scheduled public programs Sept. 15 through 19, with related events continuing through the fall.

The centerpiece is a free lecture and anniversary gathering Tuesday from 6 to 9 p.m. at UC San Diego's Jeannie Auditorium. Marcia McNutt, a Scripps alumna and former president of the National Academy of Sciences, will deliver the keynote. NOAA research fish biologist Noelle Bowlin, who leads the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations program, will also speak about biodiversity and human well-being.

The evening extends beyond talks. UC San Diego says the program will include a ResilienSEA performance, printmaking and an open house in the Craft Center's surfboard-shaping workshop. On Saturday, Birch Aquarium at Scripps will host a community marine-conservation celebration with family activities and hands-on work led by center-affiliated researchers. Unlike the Tuesday event, the aquarium program requires admission.

The schedule reflects the center's operating idea: ocean conservation is scientific, social and practical at once. Nancy Knowlton proposed the center at a Scripps retreat in 2001 as pollution, fishing pressure and climate change were altering marine systems. Scripps and NOAA Fisheries' Southwest Fisheries Science Center became early partners, and a $3.5 million National Science Foundation grant supported students and interdisciplinary training.

That training grew into a one-year Master of Advanced Studies program in marine biodiversity and conservation. The center now counts more than 250 affiliated students and 500 Scripps alumni, according to UC San Diego. More than 50 graduates have become NOAA Sea Grant fellows, working in Congress and coastal or ocean agencies. Those totals measure reach, not the condition of an ecosystem, but they show how the program moves research into institutions that make decisions.

The research footprint spans scales. Work in the Northern Line Islands helped inform the 2009 establishment of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument, which protects nearly half a million square miles. Other teams have studied marine protected areas in Mexico, deep-sea species, mangroves, coral monitoring and the connections between islands and surrounding waters.

More recent initiatives connect those themes. The Island-Ocean Connection Challenge aims to restore at least 40 significant ridge-to-reef systems by 2030, while a plastics initiative addresses contamination across borders. The center also maintains relationships with California Sea Grant, NOAA Fisheries and the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance. Each partnership expands capacity while adding the need to define who measures success.

Near San Diego, affiliated scientists examine kelp-forest health and whether seaweeds can contribute to climate solutions. Those questions unfold across currents, heat waves, nutrient cycles and successive growing seasons. A center anniversary cannot demonstrate that a habitat is recovering. It can reveal whether the partnerships, monitoring and trained workforce needed to recognize change are still in place.

The next 25 years will operate under more crowded demands: conservation targets, fisheries, coastal economies and a warmer ocean occupy the same water. The public programs make that tension visible without resolving it. A lecture can connect past work to a new audience, while the harder measure remains offshore and over time—whether research changes management early enough for reefs, kelp forests and deep habitats to retain function.
