Cameron Cooper changed San Diego State's first Pac-12 win at both ends of the scoring sequence. His blocked field goal kept Texas State from widening an early lead, and his fourth-quarter interception return supplied the touchdown the Aztecs ultimately needed. On Tuesday, those two plays made him the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week.

Cooper is the third SDSU player to receive the weekly national award, following Matt McCoy in 2004 and Kameron Kelly in 2017. The Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club announced the selection one day after the Pac-12 named the junior linebacker its defensive player of the week. The national recognition also places Cooper on the watch list for the season trophy.

The first swing came in the second quarter at Snapdragon Stadium. Cooper blocked a 35-yard field-goal attempt that would have pushed Texas State ahead 20-3. No points appeared on that snap, but its value grew as SDSU erased a 14-point second-half deficit and turned a game controlled by the Bobcats into a one-possession finish.

The decisive play arrived with 3:02 remaining. SDSU had just taken a safety, cutting its lead to 24-22, and Texas State started from its 30. Cooper deflected quarterback Brad Jackson's pass, caught the loose ball himself and returned it 32 yards for a touchdown. The score created a nine-point margin. The Aztecs needed nearly all of it in a 31-29 win.

He also made a season-high seven tackles, broke up a pass and recorded a quarterback hurry. Those snaps represented his most substantial playing time of the season after transferring from Division II Western Colorado. Through five games, Cooper has 22 tackles, including 11 solo stops, a 10-yard sack, one interception touchdown, one pass breakup, one blocked kick and three quarterback hurries.

The weekly program has existed since 2001, while the FWAA has selected a national defensive player of the year since 1993. The trophy took Nagurski's name in 1995. That history gives the Tuesday selection a defined scope: Cooper was judged the strongest defensive performance of this particular week, joining an honor roll that feeds into, but remains separate from, the season award.

The award recognizes one week, not a completed candidacy for national defensive player of the year. Finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy will be announced Nov. 19. The winner will be selected from four finalists, presented at a Dec. 7 banquet in Charlotte and announced again during the Dec. 11 college football awards broadcast. Cooper's place on the watch list opens that path; it does not settle it.

Saturday's comeback matched the fourth-largest second-half deficit overcome by an SDSU team since the program entered Division I in 1969. Cooper's contribution was unusually direct in a two-point result. The block removed a possible three points from one Texas State possession. The interception created seven for SDSU on another. Neither calculation stands alone, but together they explain why a linebacker with seven tackles became the national weekly choice.

The Aztecs take a 2-3 record and a 1-0 Pac-12 mark to Oregon State on Saturday for a 3 p.m. kickoff. Cooper now moves from a breakthrough role to a road test with opponents prepared to account for him. The award preserves the Texas State sequence. Oregon State will measure whether it also marks a larger place in the defense.
