San Diego State will carry a Spanish-language radio broadcast for all six regular-season home football games in 2026, expanding a limited service into a full home schedule as the Aztecs enter the Pac-12. The streams will be available through GoAztecs.com and the official SDSU athletics app, the university announced Friday.
The change establishes a consistent destination rather than a game-by-game exception. SDSU offered what it described as its first Spanish call by a school broadcaster for the 2024 home game against Hawai'i, then covered most of the 2025 season. This fall, listeners will not have to determine which Snapdragon Stadium dates are included.
Tony Alvarez returns for play-by-play. SDSU identifies him as a reporter for Televisa Tijuana and Las Noticias, with earlier Spanish and English commentary work involving the former San Diego Chargers and Tijuana Xolos. His play-by-play background also includes the Tijuana Zonkeys basketball team, Tijuana Truenos baseball team and college football at Universidad Autónoma de Baja California.
Pedro Gutiérrez will again join Alvarez. He has spent 13 seasons on the San Diego Padres' Spanish broadcast team, hosting pregame and postgame programming across the 162-game schedule, filling in on radio and television play-by-play, and serving as a co-interpreter for Spanish-speaking players. He also worked eight seasons in the Mexican Winter League.
The distribution is digital. SDSU's announcement names the athletics website and app, not a separate over-the-air frequency for the Spanish call, even though San Diego Sports 760 and JMI Sports participated in the announcement. That detail matters for access: a listener needs an internet-connected device and must find the correct stream, while traditional radio can be received without a data plan or app account.
Coverage begins with Saturday's 6:30 p.m. opener against Portland State. The second nonconference home game brings James Madison to Snapdragon Stadium on Sept. 19. Pac-12 home dates follow against Texas State on Oct. 3, Fresno State on Oct. 17, Washington State on Oct. 31 and Utah State on Nov. 14. The release lists kickoff times for all six games, although college schedules can change for television.
The six-game commitment arrives after a stronger home season. SDSU improved from 3-9 in 2024 to 9-4 in 2025 and went 6-0 at Snapdragon Stadium, its first undefeated home campaign since 1996. The Aztecs outscored home opponents 187-41, according to school records cited in Friday's release. Spanish coverage does not depend on repeating that performance; its value is reliable access across the schedule.
For SDSU, the practical measure will be whether the streams are easy to locate, start on time and remain stable under game traffic. The university did not publish audience totals for its earlier Spanish broadcasts or a separate budget for the expanded service. Without those figures, the announcement establishes availability but does not show how many listeners the first two seasons reached.
A complete home schedule gives the department a better basis for measuring demand than isolated broadcasts did. It also lets Alvarez and Gutiérrez carry story lines from the opener through conference play without handing listeners back to another feed. The first test comes Saturday evening, when the promise of six games becomes a live product.
