San Diego State begins its men's golf season with 108 scheduled holes, one cross-state flight and no idle day between tournaments. The Aztecs tee off Saturday at the Sahalee Players Championship in Washington, finish Sunday, fly home that night and start the Vuori Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe on Monday with the same five-player lineup.
SDSU said it believes the sequence is a program first: consecutive tournaments played by the same starting five without a day off. The opening assignment is 54 holes over two days at Sahalee Country Club in Sammamish. Two rounds are scheduled Saturday, followed by the final round Sunday on the par-72, 7,003-yard layout.
The field leaves little room for a gradual start. Top-ranked Florida leads a 12-team group that includes No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Arizona State, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 12 Illinois, No. 13 Pepperdine, No. 14 UCLA, Duke, California, Arizona and host Washington. SDSU is receiving votes in the preseason Bushnell/Golfweek Division I poll.
Coach Ryan Donovan's five are junior Harry Takis, freshman Brayden Forte, junior transfer Lequan Wang, sophomore Beau Sahr and junior Kai Hirayama. Freshman Miles Kuhl will compete as an individual at Sahalee. Forte and Kuhl make their college debuts; Wang makes his SDSU debut after two seasons at UC Davis and a 71.7 scoring average over 32 rounds last year.
Takis sets the internal pace. He averaged 69.23 over 30 rounds in 2025-26, more than a stroke below the previous school record, and recorded 17 rounds in the 60s. His season included one victory, two runner-up finishes, six top-10 results and first-team All-America recognition from both PING and Golfweek. His 70.29 career average is the best in SDSU's recorded history.
Sahalee also supplies a direct comparison. SDSU tied for fifth there last season, with Takis finishing second at 2-under 214. Hirayama, the only other returning Aztec who played that event, tied for 41st at 11 over. Saturday therefore tests whether an experienced leader and a lineup with three debuts can reproduce a team result against a deeper ranked field.
The event's setting carries its own competitive history. Sahalee hosted the independently run Sahalee Players Championship 26 times from 1992 through 2019 and later staged major professional events, including the 1998 PGA Championship and the 2016 and 2024 Women's PGA Championships. Past amateur fields included players who later reached the sport's highest levels. None of that changes Saturday's scores, but it explains why a season opener can draw seven ranked teams.
The transition home is part of the competition. The same group is scheduled to play Monday and Tuesday at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in a Vuori Invitational field led by No. 10 Arkansas and No. 23 BYU. Host USD, Colorado, Colorado State, Long Beach State, Oregon, Pacific, San Jose State, Tulsa and USC complete the 12-team field. Tee times were not available when SDSU announced the plan.
Two scorecards will show more than two finishes. Sahalee measures the Aztecs against a national field on a championship layout; Rancho Santa Fe measures recovery, travel and course adjustment less than 24 hours later. With only one more fall event scheduled after the double—New Mexico's William H. Tucker Intercollegiate—the opening four days will account for most of SDSU's competitive autumn.
