San Diego State's first road trip will test whether the most explosive parts of its opener travel. The Aztecs face UCLA at 4:15 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Bowl, one week after a 53-20 win over Portland State produced touchdowns from offense and special teams. The opener was not a normal scoring distribution. SDSU blocked two punts, returned a kickoff 100 yards and converted both blocked kicks into short-field rushing touchdowns. The school said it was the first Football Bowl Subdivision team since at least 2012 to combine two blocked punts with a kickoff-return touchdown in one game.
Lucky Sutton scored three times on the ground. Jaylon Hawkins supplied the kickoff return. Quarterback Jayden Denegal connected on 12 of 17 throws, producing 137 yards, two scores and one interception. The Aztecs used 82 players, believed by the program to be a school record, as a 29-6 halftime lead expanded after the break.
Those numbers describe domination, but some of the mechanisms are volatile. Blocked punts and 100-yard returns can flip a Saturday without forecasting the next one. The offense now has to show it can sustain drives when field position is less generous and when a deeper defense does not yield two possessions at the edge of its own end zone.
UCLA brings a different opening profile. The Bruins began the Bob Chesney era with a 45-24 win at California and scored six rushing touchdowns. They closed with a 21-0 fourth quarter. Defensive back Ta'Shawn James intercepted two passes and made eight tackles, production that made him the Big Ten's co-defensive player of the week.
The matchup also crosses a conference line that moved beneath both programs. SDSU formally joined the rebuilt Pac-12 on July 1. UCLA left that league for the Big Ten in 2024. The labels have changed, but the series remains tilted heavily toward Los Angeles: UCLA leads 22-1-1 through 24 meetings.
SDSU's lone victory is recent enough to matter to the setting. The Aztecs won 23-14 on their last visit to the Rose Bowl in 2019, ending a 19-game losing streak in the series. UCLA answered with a 35-10 win at Snapdragon Stadium in 2023. Only Brady Nassar and Jelani Whitmore from the current SDSU roster appeared in that game, and neither recorded a statistic.
This roster is newer almost everywhere. Seven Aztecs made their first SDSU start against Portland State, 48 played their first snaps in the school's colors and 14 true freshmen appeared. The defense returned only one listed starter from a unit that led the FBS with three shutouts last season. Sione Hala's 10 tackles and interceptions by newcomers Mike Lindsay and Isaiah Green were encouraging first returns, not a settled depth chart.
Saturday should force the Aztecs away from the shortcuts that opened the season. UCLA's ground game will ask the rebuilt defense to fit runs repeatedly. James and the Bruins' secondary will make Denegal account for the ball. If SDSU can create ordinary first downs and ordinary stops after an opener filled with sudden-change scores, the Rose Bowl will reveal more about the team than the 53 on its first scoreboard.
