San Diego State found one counterpunch at Jenny Craig Pavilion. USD answered with the net. The Toreros blocked 15 attacks, held the Aztecs to .075 hitting and won 25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15 Saturday. Both teams left the local nonconference finale at 5-5, but USD carried the cleaner line into league play.
The opening set belonged to the Toreros from the first point. They led throughout and held a 15-9 advantage in kills. SDSU cut an 8-2 deficit to 20-18 on consecutive Layla Austin kills, close enough to change the pressure. USD stopped the run after a timeout and took five of the final seven points.
Set two showed the Aztecs' best offense. They hit .275 with 17 kills, then erased a 19-15 deficit with a 10-3 closing burst. Mila Gehlen delivered six kills on six attempts during that run, including the clincher. For ten points, SDSU served, defended and found the same attacker before USD could reorganize.
The match turned when that efficiency disappeared. USD owned a 12-6 kill advantage in the third. San Diego State fell behind 5-0, recovered to 8-7 with two combined blocks from Chelsea Cocks and Ella Schabort, then gave back separation through a bad set and a run of Toreros attacks. The Aztecs never came closer than three again.
USD made the fourth set even shorter with seven team blocks. BayLea Sparks had four rejections in the frame, three of them solo, while Meghan Scholz and Nemo Beach contributed two apiece. That front line narrowed SDSU's available angles and forced attacks into lower-percentage spaces. The 25-15 finish followed the geometry at the net.
Across four sets, USD led 50-40 in kills, .280 to .075 in hitting, 15-3 in blocks and 63-61 in digs. The nearly even dig total did not rescue the Aztecs because too many swings ended before a back-row defender had a chance. Blocks are both points and information: repeated touches tell hitters that the direct path is closing.
No SDSU player reached 10 kills for only the second time this season. Schabort, Gehlen and Austin finished with eight each. Kendall Mairs recorded 20 assists and 12 digs for her seventh double-double, while Logan Cary added season highs of 15 assists and seven digs. The setting split created options, but not a sustained matchup advantage.
USD's Kierstyn Brewer and Beach combined with Emma Brewer for 41 of the Toreros' 50 kills. Scholz led all players with nine blocks. The home side did commit 15 service errors, part of 26 combined, yet SDSU could not turn those free points into enough pressure because its own attack kept returning control.
The Aztecs now enter their first Pac-12 season at Colorado State on Thursday, then Fresno State on Saturday. A 5-5 nonconference record leaves neither cushion nor crisis after ten matches. The film offers a precise correction: the second-set run proved SDSU can change a match quickly, but league opponents will keep the advantage if the Aztecs cannot move a disciplined block before swinging through it.
