Matteo Saffer waited until the 89th minute to score the first goal of his college career. UC San Diego needed every second of that wait. The freshman center back's finish through traffic pulled the Tritons level with Cal Poly and secured a 1-1 draw Wednesday in both teams' Pac-12 opener.

Saffer was making his first collegiate start and appearing in only his second match. With Cal Poly protecting a lead, UCSD sent both center backs forward. Oren Stuppel curled the ball into the area, Keenai Braun headed it down and Saffer took a touch before driving a low shot through the crowded box at 88:35.

The equalizer completed a second half spent almost entirely in pursuit. UCSD outshot the Mustangs 11-1 after the break and 17-7 overall. Cal Poly sat deeper as the clock shortened, conceding possession and space outside its defensive block while allowing only two second-half attempts to test its goalkeeper.

Cal Poly had needed less than six minutes to take control. A free kick just outside the penalty area gave Colin Pearce a direct look, and he scored at 5:31. The Mustangs put two shots on target all night. UCSD goalkeeper Nic Thiele stopped the other one, leaving the early set piece as the only goal he allowed.

The opening half carried more contact than flow. The teams combined for 17 fouls and six yellow cards before intermission. UCSD still put three shots on target, but Cal Poly goalkeeper Justin Siegel held the lead. After halftime, only 10 fouls and two cautions were recorded, allowing the Tritons to keep longer stretches of possession.

Stuppel took a team-high four shots and created the service that started the goal. Saffer put all three of his attempts on target. Matias Mott supplied UCSD's other shot on frame. Those numbers show how the pressure developed: the Tritons generated repeated attempts, yet the decisive action required two defenders to stay in the attack and combine inside the box.

The point moved UCSD to 5-3-1 overall and 0-0-1 in conference. It also marked the first draw in seven meetings with Cal Poly. Three of the Tritons' goals this season have arrived in the 84th minute or later, and Saffer's was the latest. Late scoring can preserve a result; it cannot erase the cost of chasing after an early concession.

Masayuki Fujita added another small return for the roster, playing 37 minutes off the bench in his first appearance of the season. His entry gave UCSD a fresh midfield option while the team expanded its second-half possession. The minutes do not establish a permanent role, but they widen the choices available before the Gonzaga trip.

UCSD next travels to Gonzaga for a Saturday night conference match. The opener offered one clear strength and one limit. The Tritons kept a ranked portion of the field tilted toward Cal Poly's goal for most of the second half, but turned 17 shots into a single score. Saffer's timing made that conversion enough for one point instead of none.
