UC San Diego took the first set quickly, stole the second one late and controlled the third. That sequence produced a 25-13, 25-23, 25-18 sweep of Cal State Fullerton Friday at LionTree Arena, opening Big West play with the Tritons' first home victory under first-year coach Spencer McLachlin.
The hinge came after the easy part. UC San Diego had hit through Fullerton in the opener, then fell behind 7-2 in the second and still trailed 21-18. The Tritons tied the set at 21, 22 and 23 before Molly McCluskey and Ireland McNees ended it with consecutive solo blocks. A match that could have returned to even instead moved one set from completion.
McNees led UC San Diego with 11 kills and added an ace, five digs and the solo block that supplied the final point of the second. McCluskey and Madison Johnson each recorded 10 kills. That balance kept Fullerton from solving the match by slowing one attacker, and it gave the Tritons three different ways to finish a rally when the pass reached the setter.
The numbers support the sweep without making it look effortless. UC San Diego hit .270 with 40 kills, while Fullerton finished at .125 with 34. The Tritons led 6-1 in service aces and 51-41 in digs. The Titans held a 6-4 blocking advantage, but the two blocks that mattered most belonged to the home side at the close of the tightest set.
UC San Diego opened the third 5-0 and did not allow another extended swing. Fullerton got as close as 19-14 before Johnson put down the final kill. The Tritons' early lead simplified the closing work: side out, protect the gap, avoid giving away a cluster of points. They did enough of each to finish in three.
Paulina Baillie served three aces and collected 14 digs, a match high for UC San Diego. Marleena Catalan distributed 15 assists, while Dillyn Griffin added 10 digs. The defensive totals mattered because Fullerton still generated 34 kills. The Tritons kept many other attacks alive long enough to transition, rather than asking their blockers to end every point at the net.
UC San Diego came out of the opener 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the Big West. Fullerton fell to 5-9 and 0-1. It was the Tritons' third sweep of the season and improved their record to 3-0 in matches completed in three sets. UC San Diego also extended its all-time series advantage over the Titans to 9-1.
One conference opener cannot settle a season that began with seven losses in 11 matches. It can show a usable pattern. The Tritons served more aggressively, spread the attack and responded to the one stretch when Fullerton controlled the score. The second-set recovery turned a comfortable opening set into a complete sweep rather than a longer contest.
Long Beach State visits LionTree Arena Saturday, leaving UC San Diego little time to hold the result. The next match will test whether Friday's finish carries across consecutive days: not simply the final kill, but the pressure at the service line and the calm required to turn 21-18 against into 25-23 in favor.
