Six shots reached Denver's goalkeeper. None passed him. No. 19 San Diego controlled most of the ball and allowed no shot on target, yet its West Coast Conference opener ended 0-0 Saturday night at Torero Stadium.
The result gave USD its first clean sheet of 2026 after conceding exactly once in each of its first eight matches. Goalkeeper Lucca Adams worked the full 90 minutes without having to record a save. The Toreros' defense limited Denver to six shots, while the home side attempted 16 and held 58 percent of possession.
Iain Wagner created the most persistent threat. He took five shots and placed three on goal, forcing saves in the 16th, 48th and 84th minutes. Steven Ramirez added four attempts. Taj Eagleston, Samy Kanaan and Luca Fava each tested the goalkeeper once, accounting for the other three shots on target.
USD began with seven of the game's first eight shots. That pressure established territory but not a lead. Denver's goalkeeper handled every attempt that reached him, and the Pioneers survived the first half without needing a recovery goal or a chase from behind.
The most compressed surge came near the hour. The Toreros generated three shots and two corners in less than 90 seconds. Eagleston forced a save; attempts by Dylan Moreno and Wagner were blocked. The sequence captured the night: possession turned into repeated entries, but defenders and the goalkeeper kept the final path closed.
Denver found little response at the other end. The official USD box score records no Pioneer shot on target, which measures the Toreros' control more clearly than the final score. It does not, by itself, grade the danger of every blocked or missed chance. Still, a defense seeking its first shutout gave Adams a night without an emergency stop.
The goalkeeper imbalance also explains why the score can look less favorable to USD than the run of play. Denver's keeper made six interventions that preserved the draw; Adams had no corresponding save to make. USD therefore won the territorial and shooting contests without winning the one duel that changes the scoreboard. The six attempts on target were distributed among four players, but no rebound or second action produced a finish after the initial stop.
Nineteen Toreros appeared as USD tried to change the attacking picture at home. The draw moved the team to 5-2-2 overall and 0-0-1 in the conference. Denver left at 1-6-2 and the same 0-0-1 league mark. USD also remained unbeaten at home at 2-0-1 through three home dates.
A scoreless opener offers one point and two separate conclusions. USD finally removed the single goal that had appeared in every prior opponent's line, a defensive step worth keeping. It also failed to convert a 16-6 shooting edge, leaving two points available but unclaimed. The chance creation was present; the final touch against a set goalkeeper was not. The Toreros travel to LMU on Sept. 30 and return home against San Francisco on Oct. 3 with both lessons close at hand.
