Five changes at halftime, then two goals in 141 seconds. San Diego flipped a one-goal deficit into a 2-1 road win over UC Irvine on Tuesday night, using Conner Gardenhour's equalizer and Taj Eagleston's rebound finish to claim its second consecutive victory.
UC Irvine struck first in the ninth minute. A loose-ball sequence inside the penalty area reached captain Brady Treinen, whose shot went off goalkeeper Lucca Adams and into the net. The Anteaters carried that lead through a first half in which the Toreros managed three shots and produced little sustained pressure.
USD coach Brian Quinn replaced five players at the break. The scale of the change spread fresh legs across multiple lines instead of asking one substitute to rescue the match. Eagleston tested goalkeeper Alex Williams in the 49th minute, the first sign that the field had tilted. At 52:22, Tony Ramirez's cross deflected to Gardenhour in traffic. The substitute forced his only shot of the night through two defenders for his first goal of the season.
The winner followed at 54:43. A San Diego set piece traveled through the six-yard area to Eagleston. His first attempt struck the post. He met the rebound with a half-volley and put USD ahead, scoring his second goal of 2026 without giving the defense time to reset after the equalizer.
The Toreros did not retreat immediately. Between the 59th and 68th minutes, Eagleston, Matteo Salcedo, Iain Wagner, Steven Ramirez and Tony Ramirez combined for seven more shots. USD generated 11 of its 14 attempts after halftime and finished with a 5-2 edge in shots on goal.
Irvine still owned seven corner kicks to San Diego's three, a reminder that the possession was not entirely one-directional. The match also produced 26 fouls, 15 by the Anteaters and 11 by USD, with both teams working through frequent restarts. The closing work belonged to San Diego's back line. The Toreros blocked attempts in the 81st and 87th minutes, then Adams stopped the Anteaters' final shot on goal in the 89th.
Adams faced six shots, made one save and improved to 4-1-1. Seventeen Toreros played, with Gardenhour needing 45 substitute minutes to change the score and Eagleston going the full 90. Eagleston led both teams with five shots and placed two on target during the compact road victory.
The win moved ninth-ranked USD to 4-1-1 and dropped UC Irvine to 2-2-1. It was San Diego's third victory in five road matches at the front of an unusually travel-heavy early schedule. Five of the team's first six competitive games have been outside Torero Stadium.
Home now brings a sharper local edge. San Diego State visits Sunday at 5 p.m., with the match scheduled to stream on ESPN+. The Toreros will enter with fresh proof that their bench can alter a match quickly, but also with an uneven first half to repair. Against Irvine, the correction arrived all at once: one substitute through traffic, one midfielder off the post, and no answer in the remaining 35 minutes.
