The San Diego City Council approved a 25-year lease for the WorldBeat Center in Balboa Park.
A long-term agreement gives a nonprofit cultural operator more certainty to raise money, plan improvements and schedule programs. In return, the public has an interest in clear stewardship and continued community access.
The lease recognized the center's established role in presenting African and Indigenous cultures. It also shifted attention from short-term occupancy to the institution's next generation of work.
