Passenger service began on the Mid-Coast extension of the UC San Diego Blue Line, adding nine stations and 11 miles of trolley service to the regional network.
The new tracks linked Old Town with UC San Diego, La Jolla and the UTC Transit Center. Riders could travel on a single line from the San Ysidro border crossing through downtown to University City.
The opening concluded years of construction and gave two of the region's largest education and employment centers a direct rail connection for the first time.
