Point Loma turned its highest-ranked matchup of the season into a three-set home statement Thursday, sweeping No. 10 Cal Poly Pomona 25-18, 26-24, 25-19 at Golden Gym. The No. 20 Sea Lions won their fourth consecutive match and improved to 11-4 behind 11 kills and seven blocks from freshman middle blocker Kyra Miles.
The match opened with a personal note before the first rally. Gianna Callari presented the game ball in honor of her mother, a breast cancer survivor, as part of Dig Pink Night, then recorded the first kill. The ceremony was documented by Point Loma's official recap; the competition that followed quickly moved through a 4-0 run bookended by Miles kills for an 11-4 lead.
Jolyna Salas added an ace, and Point Loma never led by fewer than three for the rest of the first set. Kaitlyn Cabral closed it with a kill. The second set produced the night's decisive reversal. Cal Poly Pomona led 23-21, one rally from putting the match level, before Miles recorded a kill and a block to tie it.
The Broncos reached set point at 24-23. Point Loma answered with three straight points for a 26-24 win. That finish changed the third set's pressure: the Sea Lions needed one more, while Cal Poly Pomona had to win three. When PLNU trailed 13-12, consecutive Ila Rose aces finished a 5-0 run and created the separation that held.
Hailey Clark ended the match with a kill. Cabral finished with eight kills, while Clark and Callari had seven apiece. Sophia Baugh distributed 31 assists. Kira Federico led all players with 20 digs and Salas added 10. Point Loma hit .209 to Cal Poly Pomona's .089 and held advantages in kills, aces and blocks.
The set scores also show three different winning routes. Point Loma controlled the first from its early run, survived two set points in the second and broke a one-point deficit with serving in the third. That variation matters in a best-of-five match. The Sea Lions did not need the same player or phase to produce every separation: Miles controlled the net, Rose changed the service pressure and Clark supplied the final swing.
The error margin was as important as the ranking beside either name. Cal Poly Pomona committed 25 attack errors on 123 attempts; Point Loma had 14 on 134. The Sea Lions produced six aces and eight blocks, doubling the Broncos' block total. Those points narrowed the amount of clean offense PLNU needed, especially in the second set when the score reached its most fragile stage.
The school box score supplies the sequence and team totals but does not make one upset a full-season verdict. Point Loma has now swept three of its past four matches and owns a season-long four-match winning streak. The next assignment is another ranked road test Wednesday at No. 12 Cal State San Bernardino. Thursday showed the useful part first: under set-point pressure, the Sea Lions won three straight rallies and never gave the match another set.
