Construction on Phase 1 of Pure Water San Diego passed 50 percent completion, a major checkpoint for the city's effort to turn purified recycled water into a local drinking-water source.
The roughly $1.6 billion phase included treatment facilities, pump stations and pipelines across the northern part of the city. Once operating, it was designed to produce 30 million gallons of purified water per day.
The full program aims to provide nearly half of San Diego's water supply locally by 2035, reducing reliance on imported water vulnerable to drought, climate pressure and long-distance infrastructure.
