UC San Diego pressed Cal State Fullerton into one mistake and a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, its own failed clearance restored the tie. The Titans scored again in the 76th minute and held off a late Triton push for a 2-1 win Wednesday night.
The opener came in the 38th. Keegan McElderry poked the ball free as UC San Diego pressured Fullerton's back line, and Gavin Allegaert met it with a first-time left-footed finish. The goal rewarded a coordinated press rather than a long possession. One touch disrupted the exit; the next put the Tritons ahead.
Fullerton's answer was just as direct. UC San Diego failed to clear the ball in the 41st minute, leaving its defense exposed, and the Titans turned that opening into the equalizer. They appeared to score again before halftime, but a UC San Diego challenge led officials to overturn the 44th-minute goal for a foul in the buildup. The teams reached the break at 1-1.
The reprieve gave the Tritons time, not control. Fullerton increased the pressure after halftime as the teams combined for 17 second-half shots. Nic Thiele made four of his six saves in that period. The goalkeeper kept UC San Diego level through repeated attacks before the Titans finally found the winning finish with 14 minutes left.
Only six of those 17 second-half attempts reached a goalkeeper. Four required saves from Thiele, evidence that Fullerton combined volume with the more dangerous share of the period. UC San Diego's two efforts on target before the winner did not create a goal, and its three attempts afterward failed to add another save to the box score.
Trailing 2-1, the Tritons generated three shots and three corner kicks. None of those attempts tested the goalkeeper. That is the difference between late activity and a late chance: UC San Diego moved bodies and the ball into advanced areas, but Fullerton did not have to make a save to protect the lead.
For the match, UC San Diego spent 61 percent of its attacking time in the offensive half, according to the team's recap. It still forced only one save. Fullerton also became the first opponent this season to take more corners than the Tritons, winning that count 6-5. Territory did not translate into enough clean looks before or after the decisive goal.
The Tritons played without injured Gavin Carlson, and Matteo Saffer made his collegiate debut in the adjusted lineup. Saffer logged 66 minutes, an immediate workload rather than a brief introduction. UC San Diego fell to 5-3; Fullerton improved to 2-3-3. The result closed the Tritons' nonconference schedule before their new Pac-12 campaign begins.
Cal Poly visits September 30 for that conference opener. UC San Diego can carry the first goal's pressure pattern forward: McElderry forced the turnover and Allegaert finished before the defense reset. The part to leave behind is the three-minute response window. One clearance did not end the danger, and a controlled match became level before the Tritons could make their lead settle.
