Kennadi Borg waited at the far end of a scoreless match, then met Natalie Oca's left-wing cross with the touch UC San Diego had been missing. Her header at 79:44 beat CSUN, opened Big West play with a 1-0 win and gave the Tritons their fifth victory of the season.
The goal was Borg's second in college and her first game-winner. Its timing left the Matadors barely 10 minutes to respond. UC San Diego had already begun squeezing the match toward their end, earning three corner kicks in the final 10 minutes, and did not allow an equalizer after taking the lead.
Charlotte Wilfert handled the chances that reached her. The goalkeeper made four saves for her fourth shutout, preserving a match in which one lapse could have erased nearly 80 minutes of work. CSUN put four of seven shots on target. UC San Diego took 16 attempts and placed five on frame.
That split captures the match's tension. The Tritons produced more than twice as many shots but led the on-target count by only one. A broad shooting advantage does not guarantee a finish when attempts miss, meet a block or arrive without enough separation. Borg changed the outcome by turning Oca's delivery into a shot the goalkeeper could not stop.
UC San Diego nearly found an earlier breakthrough in the 55th minute, when a Nguyen attempt struck the top of the crossbar. The ball stayed out, and the score remained level. Rather than letting that near miss become the game's defining moment, the Tritons kept returning to the attacking third until the cross and header connected.
The last sequence demanded composure after the breakthrough as well as before it. UC San Diego's three late corner kicks helped keep play away from its own goal, but a one-score margin left no room for a lost assignment. The Tritons protected the box through the final whistle and denied CSUN a fifth shot on target.
The victory moved UC San Diego to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0 in conference. CSUN fell to 2-5-3. It also tied the Tritons' program record for victories in a Division I season, a marker reached in the first conference match rather than at the end of the schedule. The all-time series now stands 5-3-2 in UC San Diego's favor.
There is restraint in a one-goal road win. The Tritons did not turn 16 shots into a comfortable margin, and the Matadors remained one accurate strike from a draw until the final whistle. But UC San Diego paired the late goal with the defensive response it required. Wilfert's shutout made Borg's first game-winning finish sufficient.
Utah Valley visits La Jolla on September 26 before the Big West schedule resumes. The opener gives UC San Diego a result and a repeatable route: sustain pressure without opening space behind it, keep the match within one action and use width to create a finish at the far end of a cross. On Wednesday, Oca supplied the service and Borg supplied the difference.
