Keira O'Callaghan entered Senior Day with one goal this season. She left it as San Diego's leading scorer. The senior produced her first career hat trick, completing it on a 78th-minute rebound to give the Toreros a 3-2 win over Denver and their first West Coast Conference victory.
USD started all seven seniors for the first conference meeting between the programs. Denver disrupted the occasion in the ninth minute, taking the first lead. O'Callaghan answered in the 23rd after work from Mia Faklaris and Erin Callanan, but a Denver penalty in the 31st sent the visitors into halftime ahead 2-1.
The Toreros changed the shot profile after the break. They put six attempts on goal to Denver's three and kept the Pioneers scoreless. Goalkeeper Violeta Medrano made each of her three second-half saves after O'Callaghan's winner, finishing with four and protecting a match that remained open to the final minutes.
O'Callaghan returned as a substitute in the 65th. Seven minutes later, Faklaris drew a foul in the penalty area and O'Callaghan converted the kick. She is now two for two on penalties this season. The equalizer reset the match without requiring USD to change the attacking pressure that created it.
The winning sequence demanded three attempts. In the 78th, Olivia Graham sent in a free kick. Faklaris headed it on goal, and the goalkeeper saved it. Sydney Shoots followed from close range, drawing another stop. O'Callaghan reached the second rebound and finished the third chance of the possession for her fourth goal of the year.
Denver still had time. Medrano made three saves after the go-ahead goal, the last in the 86th minute. Those stops kept O'Callaghan's hat trick from becoming only a scoring note inside a draw. USD's defense did not allow the Pioneers to turn the late push into a second penalty or an open rebound of their own.
O'Callaghan put all four of her shots on target in 61 minutes. Faklaris contributed to all three goals through the first assist, the drawn penalty and the initial header in the winner. Callanan's pass on the opening goal gave her a second assist this season. The distribution matters because the hat trick ended with one player, but the chances began across several roles.
USD matched a season high with three goals and set a season high with 10 shots on target. The teams finished even at 19 total attempts. The Toreros held a 6-4 edge in corners, while Denver committed 16 fouls to USD's seven. The figures describe an assertive second half without turning the first 45 minutes into something they were not: Denver reached halftime with the lead.
The university recap is the only game source used here and does not provide Denver's account of the penalty decisions or defensive assignments. It does document the full scoring sequence and the postgame totals. For USD, the result changes its conference line and gives the senior class a home finish built around one of its own. The Toreros visit Saint Mary's on Saturday. O'Callaghan cannot carry Sunday's three goals into that scoreboard, but USD can carry the mechanism: pressure after a saved first effort, another runner arriving and a goalkeeper ready when the lead flips. Senior Day turned on the second and third chances, and the conference win survived because Medrano denied Denver the same.
