Amanda Anders needed 66 seconds to erase Santa Clara's opening goal. The Broncos required less than four minutes to reclaim the lead, then protected it through a 3-1 win over San Diego in the West Coast Conference opener Saturday at Torero Stadium.
Santa Clara broke through in the 24th minute. USD's response began when Marissa Morales reached a miscleared ball near the right end line. She pulled it back to Lily Johnson, whose first-time cross found Anders at the back post. The close-range header was Anders' first goal of 2026.
The equality barely settled. In the 28th minute, Kennedy Schoennauer received the ball near the top of the penalty area, moved around a defender and sent a right-footed shot off the right post and in. That goal restored the Broncos' advantage before USD could build on its reply.
Schoennauer struck again in the 56th. A right-sided free kick stayed alive through two touches before she finished from eight yards. The score produced the final 3-1 margin and left the Toreros needing two goals against a side that had already controlled much of the shot volume.
Anders kept testing the opening. She put all three of her shots on goal, the highest single-game total by a Torero this season. Johnson collected her second assist of the year, while Morales recorded her first. USD took the last three shots of the match, including an Anders effort in the 86th minute that forced another save.
Goalkeeper Chloe Walls matched her career high with six saves, three in each half. The raw numbers require care: Santa Clara attempted 19 shots overall, although USD's recap says the Toreros limited the Broncos to five after halftime. USD had seven shots, four on frame, and earned the only corner of the second half.
The opener came from Addie Whitehouse after Litsy Alcocer carried the attack toward the middle and found her near the top of the area. The second Santa Clara goal followed a quicker central exchange. On the third, a free kick from the right was redirected twice before Schoennauer finished. Three different constructions asked different questions of USD's defense: tracking a runner, closing a shooter and clearing a set piece.
That late activity did not erase the early damage. Santa Clara scored three times in a 33-minute span, twice within four minutes of an USD goal. The Toreros outshot the Broncos 4-2 over the final 35 minutes, but by then the match demanded a two-goal comeback rather than one clean equalizer. The final push produced chances, not the sustained sequence needed for both goals.
USD dropped to 3-5-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Santa Clara moved to 5-2-4 and 1-0. The Toreros begin a two-match WCC road swing Oct. 3 at LMU, followed by Seattle U on Oct. 7. Saturday showed that their first response was immediate; the next assignment is preventing the opponent's counter-response from resetting the match before that momentum can grow. More of the late pressure must also arrive before the score requires a two-goal recovery.
