San Diego and San Diego Unified School District broke ground on an expansion of the Wangenheim joint-use park in Mira Mesa.
Joint-use agreements open school recreation facilities to the wider community outside instructional hours. They allow dense neighborhoods to gain fields and play space without the city acquiring an entirely separate site.
The project deepened a long-running partnership between the city and school district. Its practical value would be measured in additional hours and better facilities for students, leagues and nearby residents.
